Russia to support Argentina’s participation in BRICS — Kremlin spokesman
MOSCOW, December 14 Russia hopes that Argentina will participate in the work of the BRICS format at a level that Buenos Aires sees fit, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the Rossiya-24 television.
"We hope that Argentina will continue to participate in BRICS at the level that it sees fit. And we will welcome this," Peskov said.
In his words, Russia is interested in developing bilateral ties with Argentina as well.
"And, of course, we will welcome the effort to build a good relationship with the new government in Buenos Aires," Peskov added.
At the 15th BRICS summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, on June 22-24, the BRICS leaders agreed to admit Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates as new members, effective January 1, 2024. However, after populist firebrand and avowed BRICS opponent Javier Milei was elected president of Argentina in November 2023, the country’s government announced that it would refuse to join the intergovernmental group.
