CONCEPT AND QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION

The year 2022 has become a critical juncture for the world and global governance, with geopolitical confrontations exacerbating the COVID-19 impact on inequality, health systems vulnerabilities, supply chains disruptions, spiralling food and energy prices, unprecedented inflation, unsustainable debt levels, rising volatility on financial markets, increasing digital divides and a major setback in sustainable development goals implementation. Risks of recession, mid-term growth stagnation, food and energy crises are high and growing.

The conference participants will discuss priorities for cooperation to address the manyfold risks and possible collective solutions, which should help reinvigorate true multilateralism, reform and strengthen the global governance system and move towards a strong, sustainable, balanced and inclusive post-pandemic economic recovery. The questions the speakers will address will include, but will not be limited to the following:

Can the G20 resuscitate its anti-crisis spirit to deal with the exigency of the crisis as it did in 2008-2009? What does it need for that? Can the BRICS foster the whole-of-G20 response to the unprecedented challenges or should it focus on charting the BRICS course and expanding “BRICS plus” cooperation? What role will the BRICS play in mitigating systemic risks, preventing fragmentation of global governance and ensuring inclusive and sustainable economic recovery? With Indonesian 2022, Indian 2023 and Brazilian 2024 presidencies in the G20, will emerging markets harness the opportunities to advance a long-delayed reform of the international monetary and financial system, take the responsibility for shaping truly fair and inclusive global digital economy governance for the 21st century and reverse the trends of erecting barriers to trade, investment and technology to keep the global economy open?
