On September 3, 2020 Online round table, titled "BRICS Economies: digital transformation and labor issues in the post-COVID era" will be held within the Russia BRICS Chairmanship 2020.
Time
9.30 – 11.00 AM (Brasilia)
3.30 – 5.00 PM (Moscow)
6.00 – 7.30 PM (New Delhi)
8.30 – 10.00 PM (Beijing)
2.30 – 4.00 PM (Pretoria)
The scale of e-commerce growth and the explosive demand for digital services amid the outbreak of the novel coronavirus infection have shown an important trend in both economic and social development. The session participants will discuss how to achieve digital equality within and between countries; how to develop digital cooperation between partners of the “five”; how to ensure the digital security of the BRICS countries; and how the members of the association can develop their own digital infrastructure and the potential to strengthen competitiveness with other economies.
At the same time, in the context of an economic recession amid the coronavirus pandemic, the situation on the labor markets is becoming one of the most pressing social issues. The closure of organizations, mainly small and medium-sized businesses and the reduction of staff at large enterprises provoke an increase in unemployment. At the same time, the incomes of people who have retained their jobs, according to the ILO, will decline by 10 to 30 percent. This will lead to a drop in the consumption of goods and services, which in turn will affect the economic prospects of the BRICS countries.
The session participants will also discuss what to do to prevent an increase in the incidence of poverty and hunger among the vulnerable population of the five countries; how to contain the unemployment rate; what support measures have shown the greatest efficiency; how to build social dialogue between governments, workers and employers to find mutually acceptable solutions.
